  1. I think my grandfather Peter Harwood was the Church Caretaker of this cemetry. They lived in a house there. My mother and her sisters and brothers were not allowed to ride their bikes in the cemetry and had to walk to and from the gate.

    • I have just found this interesting site. The Peter Harwood mentioned, I am doing my family tree my father had a cousin Peter Harwood born in Eaglescliffe wondered if there is any connection?

      • Hi Gillian, I just came your reply. I think your fathers cousin Peter Harwood married my widowed mother Freda Callender (known as Betty) in 1969. She was Freda Harwood before marrying my father (Ronald Callender) deceased. Her father was another Peter Harwood (my grandfather) who lived in Norton until his death in the 50’s.

Peter was from Eaglescliffe and when he married my mum they lived in Newland Avenue, Eaglescliffe where he use to live with his parents until their death. This was his first marriage and I think my mum and Peter were second cousins. He had a brother Cyril who was married to Pauline I think. and they had a daughter Maureen. I met Peter only a few times as a friend of my mums and he came to my wedding in 1968 (St Paul’s Church, Stockton on tees. I emigrated to Australia in February 69 and they married at the same church later that year.

Hope this will be of help to you.
