My wife Julie and I were married in this church in the late 70″s, my father in law Rev Bill Matthews was the vicar of the church then. The church must be the oldest surviving building in Thornaby by a long long way. Go and take a good look at it, its full of architectural features which must be preserved.
i cannot believe that we have such history on our doorstep. my daughter will be involved shortly with the local authority updating of the thornaby area and had no idea there is this legacy to take into consideration.
One of the legends of the”FIVE-LAMPS is connected with this Church. The Lord of the Manor was on Crusade in the Holy-land and was struck down, he vowed on his recovery that in his Chantry in St Peters A D Vincula he would burn five candles (two either side one above ) “For-ever”. The story continues with a replica Five-Lamps on a plinth in Acklam Road, near the Mandale Road junction
