  1. Ray Buck, thanks very much for your help, much appreciated. It was the right Thomas Harris, and since looking at the website I think I’ve found the correct Alfred, who appears to have served in the Green Howards. Although all I’ve got to go on at the moment is his approximate age.

  3. Does anybody know if a list exists of all the men from Stockton who died in WW11. My mother had two brothers [Thomas and Alfred Harris] who never returned, and due to her being very young at the time she does not know where and when they died.

  4. The Armistice of 11 November 1918 was a ‘cease-fire’ only in which all of the combatant nations agreed to suspend hostilities. Britain was technically still at war with Germany until the signing of the Treaty of Versailles on June 28 1919. This followed the Paris Peace Conference, convened in January 1919, where the victorious Nations, led by America, Britain and France – Germany and Russia weren’t invited to attend – reshaped the map of Europe and decided on what punitive measures and war reparations should be imposed on Germany.
