The names of the team are as follows back-row L to R Tony Jackson,Tommy Wing,Billy Nesbitt,Ian Gill,David Rowlands,Alan Callender,John McNaughton,Teacher Knowles,front-row L to R Craig Stephenson,Jimmy Smith,Alec Smith,George Boddy,David Leighton.
The lad 3rd from R in the back row is my brother David Rowland. After Newtown he went to Newham Grange Secondary Modern School and then in 1964 we emigrated as a family to Perth in Western Australia.
Len, Barrie Hutchcraft was in the team photo for the following year 1954-55, the cup winning team. Also in that team were Donald(Donny) Heath, John Smith, George Boddy Craig Stephenson, Tony Jackson, David Leighton and Brian Shaw. We had a different goalkeeper and two players that I cannot name.
Mr Knowles or Nogga Knowles as we called him was my Headmaster at Roseworth Junior school in the early 1960″s – although outwardly a strict person he was one of the nicest teachers you could wish for. I met him in Stockton in 1988 & when I introduced myself I was amazed that he not only remembered me but also my Sister & Brother who passed through his school after I had left.
Back-row 3rd left is Nesbitt & the goalkeeper is Ian Gill, what about Barrie Hutchcraft.George Boddy was on the London Palladium in the Seven Vallanties Troupe,John McNaughton was the singer in the Rock”an Roll group Johnnie & The Bluecaps, Craig Stephenson went to be an apprentice jockey.
I had lost my copy of this photo and thought it had gone forever. Thank you Alan. Mr Knowles took the top stream class at Newtown and was the only teacher there I ever remember using corporal punishment – he used his flat hand across the backside – it was the indignity I felt more than the pain. He had a Morris 8 car I seem to recall. This photo shows some of the team that went on to win the N Winn Cup the following year(1954/55) after a replay at Tilery Rec. I think Don Heath was in the later team. Sorry can”t add any more names. Was the goalie Ian Gill? or Gilmore? George Bodie and Alan were both decent gymnasts – we trained together at the Eastbourne Youth Club – I think George joined Moscow State Circus with Laurence Pitt and Terry Lewis.
Yet more memories for me on this site!! Mr Knowles was my sholarship class teacher at “Freddy Nat “in 1951/2. I met him at a family wedding many years later and he hadnt changed a bit!
After being demobbed after WW2 Mr Knowles 1st teaching post was at the Frederick Nattrass Junior School. His wife worked in my sisters shop “The Golliwog” Durham Road in Newtown.
I can name four of the footballers as well as myself. Back row: Tony Jackson (end left), Alan Callender (2nd from right). Seated: Craig ? (end left), George Bodie (2nd from right) and David Leighton (end right)
3rd from the left back row is my Dad, William Nisbet.
