  1. I went to Tilery school and remember Mr Crimson, Mr Coombs he married a fellow teacher is there any more photos from 1965 I lived just across the road in Carlisle Street

  2. Just remembered again about this site and photos so catching up with some of the comments. What a rag bag of a kit we had! Couldn’t even find matching socks for the front-line! HaHa! Anyway, I much preferred the blue and yellow we played in.

  3. Thanks Ken, once again your memory has came in very useful – I knew he was the trainer, sponge man in those days. Jack Nicholson was also Bill Harburns uncle.

  4. My first games for the newly arising Stockton RFC were in September & October 1946. Then I went to do my stint in the army but started playing again in 1949 having started again in the teaching profession for 2 terms at Tilery before moving on to Richard Hind in September 1949.
I recall Jack Nicholson on the committee and as sponge man!

  5. Jack Nicholson was with Stockton Rugby Club in the forties & fifties as a committee man. I seem to remember that the Sutton Arms, Elton was one of their watering holes. Jack came from Suffolk Street, Oxbridge.

  6. Good Day to you Anon. It is not much of an excuse I know, but after forty six years away from the Stockton Rugby Club, I find that some of the memories are beginning to fade a little. And the major casualties are the names of some of my erstwhile colleagues. Those with whom I had close contact I still remember, but sadly, I do not remember the name of Jack Nicholson, either as player or Committeeman. Could it be that his connection with the Club came after ’65, and if so, I was basking in the sunshine in Australia by that time.

  7. Did you know Jack Nicholson from your time on the Selection Committee at Stockton Rugby Club or your playing days, Harry?

  8. The second Teacher in the back row is definately Reg Crinson. We were next door neighbours, and together with Harry Rigg and Jim Dillon from St Cuthbert’s School, formed the nucleus of the Rimswell Drinking Society. In this Soccer oriented group, I was the odd man out as a former Rugby player, and at that time was on the Selection Committee at Stockton Rugby Club. After my migration to Australia in ’65 I had very occasional contact with Reg, the last letter that I received was two years ago. He said that he had had a bad fall and was walking with the aid of two sticks or crutches. I was interested to read Ken Sawyer’s comments that he had played Rugby with Stockton shortly after the War, as I played my first game with Stockton in ’46 at the age of sixteen. Most of the players were returned Servicemen and I remember Bob Coulson, Arthur Fairless, the Race Brothers, Charlie Tealey, Dennis Orris and Alan Barber. I learned a lot from them, some of it concerning Rugby. As my last letters to Reg Crinson have gone unanswered I would be pleased to receive any news of him.

  9. Hi David,

Great to hear from you – Yes you did play in the team, that’s why we always lost (ha ha just kidding)

Funny how Brian Madigan (who has just visited me in Melbourne – What a time with too much red wine) and David Goldsbrough have a copy of this picture. It is the only photograph I have of Tilery Rd which is a great pity.

Just love this site – many fond memories

    • Omg George Thompson, I’ve often wonderd how you, Alan and Arthur are all doıng, do you remember me Yvonne Cockcroft, my nan had the corner shop on Garbie Annıe Harrises. Hope you read this one day x

      • Hi Yvonne,
Yes we are all alive and kicking in Melbourne. It’s a long way from Tilery Road in distance but not in time.
We all have fond memories of our childhood in Kingston Street. Very tough times but they still live on as some of the best times of our lives.
Australia has been good to us and we are all doing well.
Planning another trip to UK next year so would like to catch up with any Tilery crew.
        We should organise a reunion?
        Cheers
        George

  10. Just came across this picture. I occasionally played in this team! What memories. Did we ever win? I lived in Shepherd St before being moved out to Salters Lane. David Goldsbrough and I shared a birthday if I recall.

    • Hi David,
Your old mate George Thompson here. I remember spending many a day at your place watching Thunderbirds ha ha

      • George

Just seen this series of posts. Hope you are well.
It would be good to get together if you come over for a visit. Unlikely I will be coming your way. I think one of us will have to wear a red carnation or carry a copy of the Gazette under our arm for recognition purposes.

      • Hi George you won’t know me but you know my dad Clive Smith? He was wondering how you are doing and if you are visiting the UK any time soon? Kind regards Louise

        • Hi Loise, Sorry I haven’t visited this site for a while. I did know your Dad Clive (Miffy) Smith and I have been looking for him to contact for quite a while now. Your dads close school friends Anthony (Anth) Spacey ad Brian (Brim) Madigan and myself were inseparable at Richard Hind School. We have had a number of reunions and I have been really trying to invite Clive but no one knew where he lived. Can you please pass on my contact details to him as I would love to hear from him. If you contact the Picture Stockton team at pictures@stockton.gov.uk they will forward on my email address. Cheers George

        • Hi Louise,
George Thompson Here a friend of your Dad’s from Richard Hind School. We are planning another reunion this year so I would love to hear from Clive. Please get him to friend request me on Facebook or search for Norman Hill who is helping coordinate things. Regards George

  11. I went to Tilery School 1954 to 1955 then moved to the new Roseworth estate. I remember the Tilery road caretaker and his family lived in the schoolhouse facing Tilery road in the grounds, they were friends of my Mother. Then Eva Whitfield who lived at 21 Moss Street, along with Brothers “John (Later became last Mayor Of Stockon before it became Teesside) George & Harold, end terrace, side on to the Clay Hole. What days I remember there, I was only 4 years old but remember it vividly, including the school hand bell rang every break time, and busting my head open from swinging on the road barrier outside the gates, near old Mr Gutheries shop.

  12. Great days,I never missed a game in them days – tilery, in the sixties magic times. Does any one remember a teacher called mr sparks from that era?

  13. The Smiths did have an off licence on the corner opposite Rowntrees. (just outside the school) They had a son called Howard.

  14. John McAlees who posted 05/09/2007 is quite correct. The teacher 2nd from left on back row definitely is Mr Reg Crinson. He was already on the staff when I joined it for 2+ terms in October 1948 on demob from the Army. Often met him on Saturday mornings at Grosvenor Road playing fields when Stockton Schools” FA matches were being played. I had moved on to Richard Hind as I preferred secondary school teaching. Mr Harry Rigg was secretary of the Schools” FA for years including when he was Head of Portrack School. Stalwarts those men.

  15. THE GOALKEEPER WHOSE NAME IS MISSING FROM THE TEAM PHOTO IS I THINK,HOWARD SMITH, HIS PARENTS MIGHT HAVE HAD A SHOP OPPOSITE THE SCHOOL ON TILERY RD

  16. I agree with George that the gentleman at back left on this photo is called Benzies who finished his teaching career at Ian Ramsey School and then became a curate at St Peters church on Yarm Road.My son Derek was a pupil at Ian Ramsey while he was there and i came to know him quite well.He may now have retired.

  17. Teacher at back left is (bill ) Benzies. The only one now missing is the Goal keeper who”s name I think was Howard?

  18. The missing names from Tilery Road Football Team 1964 are: Back Row Team Left Side, Keith Ferguson. Front Row, 2nd Left, Kevin Powell, 3rd From Right, Colin Butterworth, End Right, Alan Cuskern.

  19. Dave Goldsbrough; re photo of 1964 team 2nd teacher on the back row is Mr (pop)Crinson. He taught at Tilery for a lot of years.

  20. Tilery Road Junior School Football Team 1964 – Left to right teachers at back (LtoR):- ???, Mr Coombs. Mr Brown, Mr Rigg Headmaster. Back Row Team (LtoR):- ???, Billy Clark, ???, Yours Truly Dave Goldsbrough, Brian Madigan, Front Row Team (LtoR):- Michael McGarvey, ???, George Thompson, John Wells, ??? Butterworth, Stephen Duffy, Alan Cuthbertson?

    • Great memories of this picture being taken. I can still recall how Bill Benzies hand slipped when writing the date on the ball so many years later.
Not sure why we changed from our gold strip?
Still great friends with Brian Madigan, who visits me in Melbourne, Australia. Tilery Road is still in my memory after all these years.
      Keep in touch boys
