  1. I recognize two boys in this photo, front row second lad in from left I think is Peter Tinkler who was in the same class as me in our last year at school 1964/1964 when we went to Albany Secondary Modern and also the lad with the scowl on his face and his socks round his ankles is my brother David West, probably been told to ‘pull his socks up’.

  2. The names of those from Redbrook who passed the 11 plus in 1960 were June Allen, Glyn Davis, Paul Riley, Colin Ward, Marylyn Wallace, Doreen Mills, Lynda Dickinson, Arthur Richardson, Trevor Jones and myself Dave Moody. Ivy Jones was in our class but was slightly younger. She stayed on and passed the following year. We were told by Mr Brown the headmaster that our year was the best he had ever taught. I suspect he said that to other years to boost their self esteem and confidence. But I like to think he got that one right. Just a note, I think Ivy Jones worked in the main Stockton Library next to the Parish Church for many years.

  3. Strange to see this photo taken several years before I was born. George Gardner (1919-1987)was my dad. He taught at Tilery, then at Redbrook and finally at Fairfield Junior School until he retired in 1984. He was a modest man and would be surprised that people still remembered him 50 years later!

  4. Just wondering if the Dave Young mentioned used to work at Whitelocks cheese factory driving their wagons and then later at Youngs Seafoods as a delivery driver.

  5. I reckon you’re right Edgar. Alan Young was a younger brother of my mate and contemporary, David Young or “Nav” as we always called him. Alan and Graham Pickup were junior members of the gang based around Keith Thomas’s paper lads at the shop on Norton Road and eventually had rounds of their own. (You were in the same class as me at SGS – until you fell out with the Rev. Evans in Latin class.)

  6. Regarding the above photograph. I think it must be 1958/59 as I was in the junior team the previous season and we came second in the league. I’ve still got my medal which I will copy to this thread shortly. By the way, Chris Bloomfield was centre half and captain of our team. I have more information from this era and invite comments on this subject.

  7. I have a copy of this photograph myself. I was the goalie (centre rear). I remember Mr Gardner well as a good teacher who managed to get three of us past the 11 plus. I emigrated to Western Australia in 1963.

  8. Just one correction to the names, Jeff Shute is actually Jeff Shutt. I remember most of those named from my days at Tilery Road Boys School. I am still in contact with Jeff who still lives in Stockton. I emigrated to South Australia in 1968 and would be interested to know if any of the others from the picture are still around. Keep up the good work Picture Stockton team, you have a great site that I read regularly and I know several other family members down this end of the world read it too. All the best everyone.

  9. I attended Tilery Road Boys during the period 1955-1959 and a Mr Gardner was certainly on the staff when I left. He used to take a group of the 10/11 year olds and coach them for the 11 plus with quite a good record of successes. Pupils would have left Tilery for either Stockton Grammar or Grangefield Grammar.

  10. Did Mr Gardner teach at Fairfield Junior School in the early seventies. I attended the school in 1974/1975 and was taught by a Mr Gardner who I recall was very tall.

  11. Mr Gardner or Mr Gardiner must have left Tilery in 1959/60 to take over a teaching post at Redbrook School in Roseworth. He replaced Mr Dack who left around 1960. Mr Gardiner was also in charge of the football team at Redbrook. He must have been a decent teacher as ten pupils at Redbrook in 1960/61 passed the 11 plus, to go to Grangefield or Stockton Grammar School.

  12. Back Row L to R – Mr Gardner, Jeff Shute, Alan Young, Robert Waller, Malcolm Randall, Robert Robinson, Mr Rigg Front Row – Ray Longley, (?) , Norman Ritchie, Graham Pickup, Joe Bloomfield, David West, Dennis Nichol
