A lot of names cropping up on the site are reminding me of my days in Stockton Steel Foundry, for example the name Hartley. At SSF I remember two Hartley’s, big John on the small bumping machine and his son, Tony?, who I seem to remember was a core maker. What a nice pair of lads. Any relation Gerrard?
I think the ship is the ‘Bonaventure’. It became a shady nightclub for a few years and the building to the left of it in the same picture was an engineering works. Next to it, out of site of the camera, was the Stockton Boat Club, a low wooden hut structure. The place where I first got served with a pint at the age of 14 ( I was tall and my older brother was serving!) and with the confidence of that I moved on to be a regular in the ‘Board Inn’ on Bishopton Lane, I was proud to receive a 21st card from the barmaid on my 16th!!
One picture of a small ship obviously includes the new part of the quay. Another picture, of the Victoria Bridge, in the distance ,also shows a quay that must have abutted onto the the old concrete flour mill. And another picture, which includes a tall brick built building, may be of the old marshalling yard near the Victoria Road. Am I right about these?
