Winifred was, in fact, the mayor of Hartlepool in 1956, one of the first female mayors in the country. Her daughter, Edna was mayoress and her husband, Thomas, was deputy mayor. The following year, 1957, Thomas took over as mayor and Winifred was his mayoress. Thomas went on to receive the British Empire Medal for his services to Hartlepool and he has a road named after him, Brewards Walk, in Hartlepool. I’m Frazer’s little sister and both Frazer and I are very proud of our family connections with Hartlepool.
Winifred Breward pictured above was my Great Grandmother. Unfortunately she died shortly after I was born in 1969. Winifred was Mayoress of Hartlepool in 1956 and the post was taken on in 1957 by her husband Thomas Breward in 1958. Their Daughter Edna MacIntosh died in 2005.
