  1. This photo shows the shop on the right is Jacksons the tailors it is shown elsewhere on this web site as Mad World which it later became.

  2. Remember attending the ABC minors every Saturday morning, used to dread getting called up onto the stage though. My gran worked in Petes Snack Bar opposite so it was mushy peas & chips and a bottle of Vimto when the ABC minors finished. Kids nowadays just don”t get these delights, its a Greggs sausage roll for them now (known as a Greggs dummy when given to the small children in pushchairs).

  3. Ah the ABC Minors. We all had a badge that glowed in the dark and sang the song at the start of the show… “We are the boys and girls well known as, Minors of the ABC, who every Saturday all line up, to see the films we like, and shout aloud with glee!” Why have those words stuck in my memory for all these years? Phil Spector never allowed Ike Turner into the studio during the recording of that record, which was a flop in the USA. It made No.3 in UK and Ike joined in with Tina for the stage performances.

  4. I used to go to the ABC on Saturday mornings to watch the regular Children”s film club, now all noise and confusion with half remembered clips, usually wild west and space exploration in grainy black and white. Later on, I remember being at the ABC…back of the circle … covering my ears with both hands to block the screams of (mainly) girls as the Beatles tried to play over the top of the incredible volume. Post 1966 (as I was driving)I can remember sitting in my dad”s car at the back of the ABC and seeing the Rolling Stones bursting through the stage door and into the back of large black car following their concert and then us chasing the car as it speed off under the station bridge and off towards Fairfield.
