  1. As far as I knew, Portrack School was not a church school. When I attended that school it was called St Annes and despite it’s name, took pupils from any faith who lived in the Portrack area.

  2. Brian Codd mentions Lol Degnan in his posting. Lol is my brother-in-law who leads a quiet life these days, he will reach his 70th birthday in a few weeks time.

  3. I went to St Bedes school, stockton. In my class were two boys in the photo, Lol Degnan and David Watts. I wonder if Portrack school was Catholic as was St Bedes.

  4. Yes it is the same John Walmsley that married the late Anne Dalkin as its my late mam and my dad in the photo.

  5. Would anybody know if the John Walmsley on this photo is the same one who married Ann Dalkin (my late aunt) and lived in Airton St in the early 1960″s.

  6. I know all those lads very well. I lived next-door-but-one to the Bowies. Mick Burns was a great lad and used to look after me. Went to school with Terry Degnan, Peter Smith and Les Flanagan. Freddie Carter is my cousin, smashing lad. The first time I heard “I got you babe” by Sonny and Cher, was on the Melba Bar juke box – great days.

  7. RAY, I CAN”T PLACE YOU FROM THE MELBA BAR DAYS. THE CROWD I KNOCKED ABOUT WITH IN THOSE DAYS WERE, GEOFF BLACKBURN, ALBIE HINDMARSH, JIMMY MANNION, SWALLOW SWALES, MICK BURNS, MALLY WOODS, MICK DEGNAN, TERRY O”CONNEL – WE HAD SOME GREAT TIMES. STILL DON”T KNOW HOW WE COULD AFFORD TO BUY DRINKS AND FEED THE JUKEBOX, BUT WE DID!

  8. I vaguely remember you, Ray. Did you have a brother called Freddie? I too used to hang round the Melba bar with Alan Brown, Geordie Clarkson, Les Dowd, Ray Steele, Degnans, Albert Arnmarsh, Peter Smith, the Bowies, Jimmy Mannion and Len Arcourt – I could go on! I think your brother is in Australia now.

  9. I went to that school in the late 50s then went to St Marys and then St Bedes. I also knocked about the Melba bar in the 60s.

    • Hi Ray – I can vaguely remember you at Carlisle Memorial School in Portrack Lane. I started school 1955 we then went to St Marys in 1957. We then left to go to St Bedes in 1961.I was wondering do you know of any one who went to school with us Who will have any class photographs while we were at Carlisle Memorial or St Marys school. All the best Harold Stephenson.

  10. To Jean Rochford (nee Fowler ) – I knew Mary had died but I did not know Norman had. I offer my condolences to you and yours, theY were a great couple and will be sadly missed.

  11. I read the comment from Tony Scott and as a daughter of Norman (Nosher)& Mary Fowler (nee Mannion)it is nice to know that there are people out there that still remember them as good friends. I wish to inform that Mary died Aug 2002 and Norman died Oct 2007. Had they still been around they would have been pleased to hear from long lost friends.

  12. It was nice to see a pic of young Jimmy, Joy Mannion. We use to knock around the Melba bar in Norton when we were teenagers and Mary his sister married Nosher Fowler who were good friends of ours.

  13. Hi, it was nice to see the picture of the children at the school. My Uncle Smokey Joe Mannion as a young boy. Sadly Joe is not with us any more. He was a lovely man and I have memories of my Uncle Smokey what I will treasure for ever. My children would call Uncle Smokey the candy man as he always ad a pocket full of sweets. My kids used to wait for him coming down the road where he would give them loads of candys. He gave me a black bullet, I was at dentist next day. He was a real gentelman.
