  1. I always thought Yarm Bridge most interesting, more so when you think how old parts of it are. If you walk under the first arch on the town side, look up to see the original section of the stone arch, so very narrow! The add on sections that give it the width you now travel over! The early arches date from around the 1300’s I believe one section was replaced by a draw bridge during the Civil war. I worked for Cleveland C.C Building Section and I always got the phone calls when the bridge was hit by a bus. A wagon and a car. We made the pave areas safe boarding and scafolding the demolished sections then recovering large stone from the river bed, always on the low tides on sundays so we could put a crane on the bridge. These large stones cost up to £300 each, also cap stones had to be made. I think I could write a book on all the works we did.
