I went to Richard Hind primary from 1968 to 1970 I have lovely memories of going to school, I only lived in Castleton Road which was 2 mins away. If anyone remembers me please get in touch. I was Imelda Heal then.
I went to Richard Hind junior school. I don’t remember that much, just little bits like playing marbles and those horrible black plimsolls you had to wear which were kept in wooden pigeonholes if I recall. The usual rows of hooks on the wall for your coats. To be really honest not happy memories. Not bad ones either mind, it just seemed strange and I can remember walking to school and thinking I would rather do something else!
I bought a recent copy of “Remember When” (Issue No.79)and on the front cover is a picture of Guiders taken in the early 1950″s. I am almost sure that a lady on the extreme left of the picture is Miss Mabbatt from Richard Hind. Anyone remember her? She was Geography in my days (1951-6).
More recollections of my schooldays at Richard Hind. Miss Rowbotham was our French teacher and when pupils misbehaved in her class she sent them to Wilmott Webster, the headmaster, who dished out punishment by way of the cane. His cane was quite a short one with a shiny knob, he used to grip it by the narrow end and hit you with the knob end. I think he was at heart a kindly man and didn”t hit very hard, not like slasher Pears who really gave you a whack. It never did us any harm and the yobbos of today could do with a bit of the cane.
These two photographs bring back a lot of happy memories of my schooldays at Richard Hind Schools starting back at around 1937 when I was aged 5 and going on until I reached the age of 15 when I went out into the world of work. I can still recall most of the teachers at both schools and still see old school friends from both schools. Both the Junior and Senior Schools had a lucky escape during the war when a stick of three bombs fell quite near with one falling across the road from both schools on the corner of Richardson Road and nearly sending me and all my schoolmates to a new school to finish our education. What a horrible thought. Happy days

These are the buildings of the Richard Hind Infant and Junior Schools. The Senior School was demolished some years ago to make way for housing.
