Former residence of Lord Stockton (Harold Macmillan), 1 Londonderry Road in Stockton 21/05/86.
This was NOT Harold Macmillians house. This was the Conservative party headquarters which he visited on many occasions.
Newtown School gates to the right of this photo is where we came out of to run upto the dinner hall at Newham Grange School.
My mother remembered going with her father DAVID MILLAR ROBINSON knocking on doors in Stockton campaigning for HAROLD MACMILLAN. This was before 1933. Her father was a Conservative town councillor for Old Thornaby Ward but retired in that year. His full council career and photograph can be seen on the GREATHEAD.ORG family history site.
I well remember when Harold McMillan arrived at Stockton to support the Consevative candidate in the 1962 by election. He gave a speech from the steps of the market cross, making reference to his tenure as MP for the town. I can”t remember the name of the Coservative candidate, but the Labour party man was Bill Rogers (duely elected). All this way before McMillan became the Earl of Stockton & Bill Rogers joined the “gang of four”.
