There was another tour on 16/4/66 with 4472. Stockton – Newcastle – Berwick – Edinburgh – Forth Bridge – Edinburgh – Hawick – Carlisle – Hexham – Newcastle – ECML. It was to commemorate Alan Pegler’s third anniversary of buying the loco from British Rail. A4 60019 did cover the Forth Bridge part of the tour if my memory serves me right.
I usually visit the Six Bells Junction website for details of railtours. This site confirms that Alan Pegler’s excursion did run between Northallerton and Inverkeithing on 16/4/66, calling at Stockton, West Hartlepool, Sunderland, Newcastle and Edinburgh Waverley on the outward journey. Stops on the return journey were at Waverley, Hawick, Carlisle, Newcastle and Darlington. The entry includes a list of scheduled timings, a photograph of the train at Hawick and a scan of a ticket for the train. There is no mention of A4 60019 being used on this train – perhaps somebody has a copy of a contemporary magazine that will give further information in this respect.
Thanks for the feedback Anon and Peter (and the link to SBJ website). This was indeed the tour that I was on.
Suspect they used 60019 on the Forth Bridge sector whilst 4472 was coaled and watered at Haymarket (assuming by that time Haymarket still had the facilities). Wondering if Bittern at that time was a Haymarket or Ferryhill based loco. Need to dig out and post my photos prior to our departure from Stockton.
Does anyone know the date when 4472 Flying Scotsman hauled an excursion from Stockton to Edinburgh, then south over the Waverley route (via Carlisle), through the Tyne valley and then (I believe) back to Darlington. I was on the excursion and suspect it was around 1966-67
This would likely be 9/5/64 when 4472 headed a Pullman special from Doncaster to Edinburgh named ‘Pegler’s Pullman’. Alan Pegler – still with us – had bought Gresley A3 Pacific 4472 ‘Flying Scotsman’ from British Railways in January 1963 for £3000. While in Scotland 4472 had its picture painted by Terence Cuneo on the Forth Bridge and this was the main reason for it going there on this particular day.The train itself returned later in the day hauled by A4 Pacific 60009 ‘Union of South Africa’, travelling south via Darlington.
Thanks Anon, but I suspect the tour was circa 1966 – 1968. We departed Stockton about 08.45hrs on a Saturday and travelled the coast route to Newcastle and on to Edinburgh. Flying Scotsman was coaled (presumably at Haymarket) whilst our tour continued (hauled by an A4 -possibly Bittern- over the Forth Bridge and then back to Edinburgh). 4472 again took charge for our return over the Waverley route to Carlisle, then via Newcastle to Darlington.
The photos of 4472 at Stockton shown here on the site are from ‘Pegler’s Pullman’ 9/5/64 as can be seen by the Pullman stock behind the loco.
