Stockton Locomotive Shed 1959

These photographs show the MPD or ’shed’ at Stockton. The first is a general view from beneath the coaling stage with several engines on display. The second looks towards the coaling stage with 68696 on the extreme left and 65747 straight ahead. The old gas works can be seen in the background. Both these pictures were taken just a week or so before closure in June 1959 by David P Williams.

  1. The second picture taken from the opposite direction shows part of the old Stockton Gasworks in the background. The ‘pipe’ connected to the building on the right is actually a sort of covered bridge containing a conveyor and would be used for transporting coal to the vertical retorts.

  2. In the first picture, locomotives on view are L to R:
65787, 61034 “Chiru”, 62042, 65773 (tender) 65788. The turntable was situated beyond no 65788. Picture taken on Sunday 7th June; closure followed 6 days later on Saturday 13th June 1959.
