While browsing the site I looked on the People pages and there is a photo of The Tees Frozen over at Yarm in 1895. There is a girl skateing on the ice. In 1895 the Tees would have been a tidal river because since the Tees Barrage was built the Tees upstream has been turned into a Freshwater Lake up to Yarm.
When the river was tidal it would have been an event for it freeze over. Since the Barrage was built it would be easier to freeze. I can remember last year a man falling through the ice trying to save his dog which had run over the ice and he drowned.
You’re right Mike, the spell from the Tees was pretty bad but I think it was the Big Freeze
of 1963.
Robert, must have been colder then as the Tees at that time was a chemical soup.
I think the last time the River Tees froze over was in the early 1960s when
the snow lasted for weeks.
I cannot recall the river having been this iced up before so took photos for posterity. You can see a darker area where the Teesside Princess was trying to keep a channel open to sail along but lost the battle due to extreme cold weather overnight.
Not sure what creature made the footprints, possibly a Swan.
