Derek Campbell Garage, 1978

This picture was taken in 1978 when Derek Campbell took over from John Rowley & Sons at the garage on the corner of Bentley Wynd/Yarm High Street. The workshop/garage was previously owned by the Dobson family and the workshop served the folk of Yarm for over 100 years. Courtesy of Win Campbell.

  1. What lovely people Derek and his wife were to deal with. The first time I ever called it was with a flat car tyre for repair, I had no money on me and it was an A19 breakdown job. I asked could I leave the tyre and go home to pick up some cash and return to collect it. Derek would’nt hear of it and repaired it on trust. I dealt with him for many many years afterwards on the principle that one good turn deserves another. We must have bought 20 or more tyres from him because of that one bit of kindness.

  2. Many folk remember that Mattie Dobson had a ‘Penny Farthing’ bicycle hung on the back wall of the workshop and it was a challenge to customers to see who could successfully ride the bicycle. The workshop has now been demolished to make way for redevelopment.
