St James Church, Hardwick

This photograph of St James Church in Hardwick was taken by Jack Marriott during the 1960’s and shows the freestanding concrete cross outside. The building of Hardwick Housing Estate was begun after national restrictions were lifted in the 1950’s and it was designed to be a self-contained community. St James Church was built to serve Anglican worshippers, just down the road from where the University Hospital of North Tees now stands. After this photograph was taken in the mid 1960’s, a mural was added to the end wall. Courtesy of Stockton Museum Service.

  1. I remember asking a parishioner about the “shape” of St James’s church when it first opened and being told that extra extensions were to be added later as the parish grew. Was one extension built on in the mid -1960s ,as I seem to remember?
