In the photo of Holgas, its 4 Nelson Tce, my mam Irene Bage (nee Flinn) used to own it prior to my aunt Ruth Pickering (nee Flinn) taking over. Spent most of my time sweeping hair up, making tea, washing towels and making set solutions as a young boy.
I used to go into Q Ward Thompson’s for fishing stuff and pellets for airguns, when it was at the back of ‘Robbos’. You may remember the young son of the owner who used to help out in the shop, I believe he still trades as a gunsmith up near Sadberge.
Ah yes, of course. Ward Thompson. It all comes back to me. Metal Hand warmers. Slug guns. A kids delight.
Regards to the Kentucky Fried Chicken, it was in 1995, that I photographed a series of shots in this area on colour 35mm slide. However, looking through the collection after reading this post, I have the original KFC shop on one of my slides. I will have to email it to PS and show everyone it.
It was only a very small take-away converted from a Terrace House, how things have changed over the years.
Yes Bob, I have my MacDonalds and KFC mixed up, the shop was on the other side of Wellington Street in John Street as stated in the previous comment from Anon. I stand corrected on both counts. I bought my first gun from Ward Thomson in the late 50s it was a single barrel 4.10 just right for a young starter and budding top gun in those days.
It is the (KFC)Kentucky Fried Chicken shop where Ward Thompsons was. MacDonalds is in the High Street.
Ward Thompsons was previously the other side of Wellington St.on the other side in Johns St.
The gun shop you recall Mervyn would be Ward Thompson’s, I used to frequent the shop in the 50s/60s it stocked not only gun requisites but also fishing tackle it would have been situated around where McDonalds is now. I believe his son took over the shop and run the business until it’s closure for the re-development of the area.
The gun shop was Ward Thompson.
I can recall in the late 50’s, early 60’s, there was a gun shop in Nelson Terrace. Used to have Ely Kynoch cartridges in the window as well as a methylated spirits hand warmer. Probably all gone now.
