Margaret Harris 1935-2015 must have attended Newtown School in the late 1930s/early 1940s. Does the school have records and photos going back that far?
I was at school in mid 60s Brian Sudron anyone from that Era remember the Blackout 1967?
I remember the day when the sky went black with a green tinge. It was 2nd July 1968. The rain and hail bounced off the ground. I hope you are enjoying your life in Australia. I lived in Melbourne in the 1990s but returned to Teesside. I know you from Newham Grange School. I was friends with the late Michael Hardwick.
My late Mum was a teacher here from the early 60s to the middle 80s. Mrs Joan Hall.
I remember Mr Glaswell, he always played the Blue Danube at morning assembly.
I started Newtown Infants School in 1952. Miss Night was my teacher and she married a Wiltshire runner named (I think) Jack Hudson or similar. Can’t remember the heads name. I was Jacqueline Williams (Jackie)
It’s lovely to see pictures of my Auntie Jean’s school (head mistress)
I attended Newtown from 68 until moving to Middlesbrough in 71 or 72. Can remember the head, Mrs Thompson and another teacher with the same surname as me, but no relation to me. Can’t remember any other teachers or classes I was in.
My old school from 1960 to 1970…
When I was there, there were the huts for 3rd juniors which in picture one would be where the white fence is.
How things have changed from sixty odd years ago, the top photo shows entrance to the school from this playground, there was none in our day and a dividing fence in the playground between the infants and the primary school. The second photo shows the Durham Road end of the playground which still has the round garden with the large trees in it and Dundas Street in the background which had the hairdressers shop on the corner of Durham Road and the left-side of Dundas Street which belonged to Primrose Hill football player Jacky Ball’s wife.
Newtown school was a primary & only went up to eleven years old, after that you went onto the senior schools (ie:-Grangefield, Richard Hind or Newham Grange). There used to be a shelter in the middle of the playground which was used as one goal & all the boys would play football with a tennis ball at the Bishopton Road end of the playground in the early fifties.
My wife was still in Newtown school when we were courting her name was Rita Taylor, she lived in Northbourne Rd Eastbourne. Anyone remember Rita, now Mrs Casey? Please ask the Picture Stockton Team if you would like to get in touch.
Sorry just came across my old posting, my wife went to Newtown school then onto Newham Grange school, and thats when we started courting, I married Rita Taylor 1970, 53 years later we have two grown up sons and a beautiful daughter, 6 grandchildren & great grandaughter, best thing I ever did meeting and marrying my beautiful wife Rita.
All the best.
Derek.
