  2. When i was in my last year at Mill Lane (Junior 4 1966) I used to go to the local shop, Peter Trevors on the corner of Fagg Street to get baccy for Pop Wilkie and Mr Longstaff. It was always the same order, 1/2 ounce of Golden Virginia and 1/2 ounce of Walnut sliced.

  3. It has been very interesting to see some comments about Mill Lane Boys’ School relations of some of my colleagues which bring fond memories of my three years teaching at this school except that there hasn’t been any comment from any of my colleagues. I particularly remember young(then) Lind Henderson who helped me in how to enter the amount of money in a register that the boys brought every week for future saving – I hope I am not making a mistake. And yes, I learnt quite a bit of woodwork from Mr Langstaff – I used to attend his evening classes once a week. This helped me quite a lot of work around the house.

From Stockton I went to North Wales College in Bangor to do a Post Graduate Diploma Course in Teaching English as a Second Language in Sept 1967 and started teaching this in Birmingham in September 1968 and retired in March 1997 and have been living in Swindon, Wiltshire ever since
    .
My late wife and I had a very happy time in Stockton as she also taught at the girls’ school but resigned after a year or so – a University lecturer in India teaching at primary school did not go well. We both visited quite a few popular places around like Roseberry Toping – a small hill from where you could see Redcar Beach, Durham, Whitley Bay, Fountains Abbey and many more but my most favourite visits were to Lake District. A very pleasant drive of ninety or so miles to Ullswater, Windermere and some more.

I hope readers do not find this too long.

    • Hello mr Pandya,

It’s great to read your comments about Mill Lane school in Dovecot street. I have heard some lovely stories about you and your wife from many pupils when you both taught at the school.
I would like to invite you to join our Mill Lane School Facebook site that I set up 4 years ago. It has many photos and stories and artefacts that you will definitely remember with fondness, including past staff and pupils who are also members of the site.
      Best regards,
      Steve

    • Hi Mr Pandya, it is good to hear from you. I often wonder what happened to you. Your quiet faith, patience and persistence had a great influence on my life. After school I started an apprenticeship with ICI After which I went to university in Edinburgh to study for a degree in engineering. After 20 years in the oil and gas industries I studied theology at Oxford and Cambridge and became a Baptist Minister, God bless you.

  6. Nice to see this photograph. I was the school clerk at the time this was taken. I was eighteen years old and this was my first job after attending Stockton and Billingham Tech. As I was also a Mill Lane girl it was reather strange to go back there to work in the Boys School, but the staff and pupils were lovely.

  7. Margaret, you are the image of your mother, Mrs Atkinson from St. John’s school – she was a lovely lady, and a brilliant teacher, I will always remember her fondly.

  8. Mr Bill Robertson was Acting Head because the previous head, Luke White, had gone to open the new Secondary School in Hardwick. Mr White’s wife, Lydia, is next to Mr Robertson and was Deputy Head.
