  1. Remember going to the youth club opposite Newtown school regularly and enjoying it from about 1970 or thereabouts.
Gordon Barrett once took a group of us to Great Yarmouth for a week, I think it was about 1976, I had a plaster cast on my leg at the time. I remember we made ourselves sick, having stopped at a pick your own strawberries farm and eating the entire field of strawberries before getting back in the van. I’m sure the youth club later moved to what used to be a bowling club on Bishopton Road West its now the Shaw Trust garden centre.
I think Gordon Barrett was head of Wrensfield School, I’m not sure about Freda Finch but they both did a fantastic job with the youth club, and I do regret not chasing them up in my later life just to tell them how much they were appreciated.

  2. I remember camping at Frosterly with the Youth Club led by Freda Finch and Gordon Barrett (I think ). Myself and two other lads went into town without permission to meet some local gals. I also remember playing cricket with another group using the site. Great days and sadly I didn’t appreciate the effort put in by the leaders till later in life.

Certainly George, Lol and Niffy were the main gymnasts in the club during the 60’s and were, if I remember correctly, at the camp at that time.

  4. Speaking of Eastbourne youth club, went once or twice with my then girl friend who was an Eastboune lass, this was in the late 60s 67-68. My girlfriend then was Rita Taylor, she lived in Northbourne Rd, we’ve been married 40 years this year. Knew Ann & George Savage, other Eastbourne lads I knew as a very young lad were George Reed, Eddy Hunnam. Any one remember Rita please ask picturestockton for my e-mail address.

  5. The Young Savage you refer to Alan, was it Brian Savage from Eastbourne who went to Newtown then Newham Grange School, because he later became a well known singer round Teesside clubland. He was the same age group as George Boddy, Lol Pitt & Niffy Bower.

  6. Yes Alan, I remember camping there in early 60’s with Newtown Youth Club. Lots of midges! Freda and Gordon Barrett were leaders at time.

  7. This photo shows the camp at Frosterly metioned by Dave Rudge and Anon on page ref t5758.

This was taken during a week (Summer 1960 I think) when the camp was shared by Eastbourne Boys Club (The club leader was Tom Petett) and the Methodist Youth Club from Newtown.
I do not know who led the youth club but at the time I believe John Smith, Joyce Latham and Val Lee were members. Val and possibly Joyce attended the camp during that week.
My memories are of exploring the countyside, swimming in the ‘river’ and ‘young Savage’ singing around the camp fire in the evening.
Can anyone out there expand on this or other weeks?
