I was top of this class in this class in the photo, I got a book at the Speech Day in the Jubilee Hall.
Sadly the teacher Miss Hilda Terrington passed away recently at the age of 83.
Is there anyone out there who went to Newham Grange school, Stockton on Tees in 1959?
Are you Peter Gilbert’s younger brother?
Sorry to hear of the sad passing of our old schoolmate Harry Groom, our thoughts at this moment are with his family.
Has anyone got any photos from 1957 – 1961?
I wonder where all the pupils in this photo are now, I know Stan Hind lives in Cyprus, Micky Ibbotson is in Kent, Lenny Nicholson is in Cheshire & Robert Skelton is in London.
The boy on the left of the back-row is Brian Phillips or Philipson who lived in the house in the entrance to Durham Road cemetery.
Brian’s name was Phillipson. his sister was called Barbara who went to the school with Irene Sexton, Margaret Hill and Christine Knox as was.
Brian had a disability & was excused from doing sport & P.T.,but nobody ever bullied him because if anybody ever tried they would have the rest of the boys in the class to answer to. He was a good scholar.
Ian MacLean, my husband, is still around although he isn’t into computers. I still show him the pics though.
I remember a bloke called Ian McLean use to live next to the Price family on Newham Grange Est.
Ian McLean has since passed away same as Malcolm Heath who both went to Newham Grange School.
David Hutchcraft is the older brother of Barry. Nice to know Brian Skipper, David Hutchcraft & Harry Groom who contribute to the site are still about.
Thanks Colin that clears it up. I remember your sister Sheilagh being a good friend of Christine.
I have just been in touch with my sister Sheilagh re Christine Klinkie (one of her best friends from school) She said that it is not her class, its not Christine and it is David Hutchcraft, not Barry. Hope this clears things up for you.
I remember when we ran at Feethams, Darlington in 1957 in the Schoolboy Invitation Races, when MacDonald Bailey & Brian Shenton were the star attractions. Phil Veitch was narrowly beaten in the finish of the 4x110yds relay by a boy called Barry Welburn, Bishop Auckland Grammer School, who was the National Schools 100yds Champion. Alan, the girl next to me was definitely called Myra & came from the Hume Street area The girl you mentioned was in the year below us & had a brother called Dennis.
Len, would the girl next to you be Christine Klinkie? I believe that she was in the same class as Barry Hutchcraft and lived in Glaisdale Ave.
The girls name was Margorie Klimitis who is front-row 2nd from left in this photo.
Christine Klinkie was in the year below this photo, it is David Hutchcraft in the photo not Barry a younger brother.

Phil Veitch was certainly a good athlete but he had plenty of competition at that time to be the school’s top half-miler with Colin(NED) Ainsley,Derek Overton & Lenny Nicholson. Boys in this class who represented the school at athletics were Trevor(BOMBER)Flint, Reg Franks, Micky Ibbotson, Phil Veitch & Lenny Nicholson.
At the Portrack end of Tilery Recreation Ground, was the Council Tip and people would scrat around on the tip for scrap and other things. This was illegal. When the Police raided the tip, the people scratting would run into the Swainby Road area and disappear out of sight. One day Phil Vietch who had just joined the Stockton Force and was a Police running champion was one of the Police who attended the tip. He ran after them and caught one of them. The arrested persons’ reply was , “Don’t bring him with you next time, we’ve got no chance with him.”
I am on the second row 3rd from the left. Standing next to me is Ian McLean. Some other names are Stan Hind, Len Nicholson, Shirley Crowe, David Hutchcraft, Philip Veich, the teacher was Miss Terrington.
