This is a print of an old glass negative I’d found of my Grt Grandfather’s shop on the High St. The shop was a grocers, at 111 High Street and was called T. Jacques & Son ( being my grt grandfather Thomas Jacques and his son Robert Henry). I think the photo was probably taken in the 1920’s. Photograph courtesy of Judith Rogers. Also shown is the Hambletonian Arms, the premises of S.Lamplugh and Laing and Sons |
My husbands grandfather had a temporary job at Laing and sons in 1913. We have a letter of recommendation on the printed business letterhead that states: Laing and Sons 113, High Street Stockton-on-Tees and below this “And the Cafe Alexandra 65, High Street”. The letterhead is slightly torn, but describes their business as tea blenders, coffee roasters, family grocers, wine and spirit merchants. It is signed Ernest Laing.
I was interested to see the name “J. Laing & Sons” on a sign on this building! Anyone know what kind of business this was? My Laing relations had a cafe on High Street at one time but wondering if this is another one! I wish the photo had included the whole building..
