  1. Hello, do any of you remember a Thomas Butler, who was in that year group? He was a friend of Jeff Ellis I think 🙂 Thank you x

  2. To Anon, just to say that the school football team I mentioned before was Arthur Head team 1955-56 seniors . Just type in that heading.

  3. John,

Thanks for putting my mind at rest over the names of the boys in this photo (and Mr Sigsworth !). You say you went to work at the Gazette in 1956 – did you come across Keith Heron while you were there ? He was at Middlesbrough High School with me, and left in 1955 after taking A Levels. I could be wrong (as you said, memory plays tricks as we got on in years) but I am pretty sure he went to work for the Gazette.

I would dearly like to get back in touch with him.

    Keith Gordon.

    • Keith, I did indeed work at the Gazette in 1956 till 1988 but I don’t recall a Keith Heron. Sorry!!! One person who came to the Gazette a long time after me and went on to make a name for herself was Pam Royle ( of Tyne Tees TV )

  4. My apologies the photo is correct it’s the names that are wrong!! They should be as follows back row left, Fred Iceton,Ronnie Larsen, me, Gordon Houldey ? , ? Malcolm Bell, Robert Huggins, Terry Brown, John Crowther, Max ? , David Henderson, Colin Whittaker. middle row left Freddie Wood, Colin Walker, Keith Alexander, Alan Duckett, John Williams, Chris Skinner, David Purchase, Brian Friend, Lionel Reed, ? Jeff Ellis, Charlie Law, Keith Tallentyre, front row left, Harry Pinnegar, Benny Wilberforce, David Craggs, Norman Liggitt, Graham Winstanley, Mr Sigsworth, Jeff Handley, Geoff Johnson, Charlie Wright, ? David Turnbull, Sorry for the mistake. I, like others, lose it a bit as we get older!!!!

  5. A few of the boys in this photo later worked at Head Wrightsons,back-row left is Freddie(Barney)Iceton, also John Crowther,David Henderson & Norman Liggitt(a Boro footballer).Bob Alexander worked for his father Bob whose garage showroom was in Trafalgar Street,Thornaby & he played cricket & football for Stockton Cricket Club,Ronnie Larsen worked at Harkers Engineering.

      • Hi Bobow where he is now?, I often wondered what happened to Gordon Houldey, he and I were good pals in those days.

      • Gordon Houldey left Teesside in about 1981 to start a business in B&B in Scarborough and still lives there. I do have his phone number.

      • Bob, good to hear Gordon Houldey is still active!! He used to live in Crosby Street and ALWAYS wore a cap!! Would appreciate the phone number if possible

    • The correct names have been added now, sorry about that. Interesting to learn of the occupations of some of the boys, you might like to know when I left school I bacame a news reporter for the Evening Gazette ( 1956- 1990 )

    • Anon, you mention Bob Alexander who worked for his father in the garage, it was KEITH Alexander in the photo not Bob. Keith eventually had his own garage at Guisborough. Also, Fred Iceton and Norman Liggitt played in the same school team as me, which can be seen on another page of Stockton Picture Archive.

  6. In response to the above comments – I have checked back and established that the photograph shown is definitely that submitted by John in connection with his comments, although obviously they do not match up.
    Steve

  7. There seems to be a problem here. John speaks of four rows of boys and there are in fact only three; also, he says the teacher in the middle row, is Miss Bell, whereas it looks very like Mr Sigsworth (if my memory serves me well), sitting in the middle of the front row. And I would have said that was Keith Alexander in the middle row, third from left – if it isn’t him, the laddie in the photo is the spitting image of Bob Alexander, who was at MHS about the same time as me, and went on to be a brilliant cricketer, and also sold those beautiful cars (Ferraris ?).

Keith Gordon (Westbury Street School from 1946 to 1948 – I sat next to Terry Dicken, at the back of the class, first with Mr Sigsworth and then with Mr Wain).

    • Sorry the names you mention are from another photo I have of Westbury street school but I’m not sure of the year. I think it must be after 1950 as we all look a lttle older !!! If you would like to see the photo you can contact me through the site.

  8. In this photograph of Westbury St form 2. Miss Bell (teacher) was mentioned but not on the photo.
However on the front was Mr Sigerley was shown but not mentioned . But all in all wonderful nostaglia for an old ex thornaby boy.

    • Re my last comment of teacher Mr Sigerley, please accept my apology for the
wrong name it should have been Mr Sigsworth, correct me please if I am wrong (again).
We can put it down to that aged old complaint an elderly moment.

      • John – I lived in Georgiana St until 1949 and then we moved into our new council house in Brotton rd near Diamond rd and we we thought we were the bees knees ELECTRIC LIGHTS INDOOR TOILET AND HOT WATER we were rapped.
So from Westbury st to Robert Atkinson delightful. Oh and I nearly forgot the BATHROOM

      • 11 Brotton Road. I was born in that house you were so rapped with Keith. Many happy memories there. Keith is my uncle.
