Mrs Atkinson, Mrs Cornforth, Mrs Ransom, Mrs Ward, Mrs Evans, Mr Wiseman, Mr Wilkinson, Mr Beckwith (Head Teacher) all there when I attended St Johns from 1963 until 1969
In the 1951 photo I remember Back Row L – R: Mrs Evans; Miss Cook; Mrs Atkinson; (?).
Front Row L – R: (?); Mr Fordy; Mr David Price Headmaster; Mr Ogden; Mrs Ward.
I was in Mrs Akinson’s ‘infants class’ 1950 – and was later in Mrs Ward’s, Mr Fordy’s and Mr Ogden’s classes.
My sister Hazel Goldsbrough (nee Jones), five years older than me, was in Mrs Evans classr. I have only fond memories of St John’s. It was a short walk to school from where we lived in nearby Deal Close. Happy days. Ken Jones
What a blast from the past! I too was in Mrs. Atkinson’s, Miss Cook’s, Mrs. Evans’ Mr Fordy’s and Mr. Ogden’s classes leaving in 1958. colour photo was well after I left. Very fond memories of the school. Who else remembers the roof blowing off?
I was Jean Hanrahan when I was there. I had to get the school bus from Norton to get there with Mrs. Atkinson ( a lovely lady).
I remember you very well, Jean. Your Dad was a chiropodist. Mrs Atkinson lived in Victoria Avenue, I lived in Derwent Street and used to travel on the school bus bus too. I just don’t remember the other children so well now. Janice Nash with amazing curls…there was a Madeline I think and my friend Anthony Blenkinsop. But it was a lovely happy school. I remember arriving on the bus that morning to find the roof of the school lying upturned in the playground. Lots of the children were crying. We were sent home for a day or perhaps two at most and then St. Crispin’s Hall and St. Peter’s Hall became our temporary classrooms until the school was habitable again. Where did my life go!
Hi Margaret
Are you sure the colour photo is 1952 and not 1962? I recognise –
Back Row:- Mrs Ransom, Mr Wiseman, ????,
Front Row:- Mrs Cornforth?, Your Mum – Mrs Atkinson (great lady and teacher) Mr Beckwith (Head), Mrs Evans and Mrs Ward.
But I didn’t think Mr Beckwith started at the school until my 1st year – 1959.
Such fond memories of a very happy school.
Best Wishes
