A class 101 DMU passes under the road bridge approaching the level crossing in May 1978. It is coming off the then 4 track section up to the site of Norton station and the track in the freight yard can be seen on the right. This would be a good ‘twin’ shot for the old photo of congestion at the level crossing.

An area I remember well. In the late 70’s myself and a friend would walk back from Billingham baths to Norton through ‘Billy Bottoms’. From the side of the beck a path led up to the top of the huge embankment where we would crouch in the undergrowth as trains approached. Viewed from the height of the tracks the freight trains looked even bigger! Harmless fun as it was I guess there were far more dangerous games played by other kids at the same spot.
This northbound train is coming from the Norton direction and is passing under the road overbridge at Billingham and approaching the site of the old Billingham railway station, replaced by the present station in the later 1960s.
