These two photographs are of the old wool shop on 95 Dovecot Street, Stockton. The first photo is from about 1958 when my grandparents owned and ran it. The photo shows my mother Jean Stobart before she was married when she used to work in the shop with her mother.
The second photo shows the wool shop in
August 2010 when I visited home during the summer. When I went back this year I was informed by a member of the council that the shop was to be demolished. Apparently it couldn’t be demolished until they bought the Chinese takeaway next door, this they have now managed; such a shame it will be all gone before I get back at Christmas.

I used to live here. When I bought it it was 2 flats then made it into a house.
I was just thinking about that Auction and you’ve really helped out. Thanks!
You’re welcome, although the sweet shop was directly opposite on the other side of the road. I remember as a child lying on the floor in front of the fire watching the Pink Panther show and Doctor Who on a Saturday tea time after popping over the road to buy Pink Panther chocolate from the sweet shop. Dovecot street was a busy road then or rather it seemed like it was when my nan was giving us instructions about crossing the road and being careful. I was born in 1965 and the shop was empty and not in use when I was a young child. We used to play in the shop when we (my sisters and I) visited on Saturday afternoons. The cash register was still on the big wooden counter and there was still the odd ball of wool kicking about with one of the shop window display dolls. I have no idea why they closed it but will ask my mother the next time I speak to her.
Thanks for the photo. I remember this shop as a sweet shop in the early 1960s.
I bought sweets from there on my way to Millane School.
