Advert for the Palais-de-Danse c1949

Advert from Stockton-on-Tees Official Guide c1949 for the Palais-de-Danse, Skinner Street.

‘There is no more popular dancing rendezvous in Stockton than the Palais-de-Danse…apart from the newly decorated interior and exterior the building is illuminated by the most up-to-date method of ‘fluorescent’ lighting’.

  1. I saw Eric Delaney rehearsing at the Pallie on my way home from Dobsons glaziers in the 1950s it will stick in my mind for ever. Barney Pattison

  2. Laughs! Flourescents? By the time the 60’s came around, operators required nightclub ‘atmosphere’ to be as dark, intimate and with as little light as possible. The only fixture reminiscent of a ‘flourescent’ tube by that time were UV (or black-light) tubes
These only highlighted ‘day-glo’ colours, or anything ‘white’….including embarrassing cases of dandruff on individual’s shoulders!
