22 Quayside – John Walker’s Home

John Walkers home (2nd from the right). After John Walker’s father died in 1812, his mother and two sisters moved into a house overlooking the River Tees.

Walker joined them on his return to Stockton. This is the house where he went on to develop the ‘friction light’ in 1826.

  1. John Walker’s former home was my family’s home from the 1860’s right up until it was demolished. It was known as 22 Quayside and on this picture is the property occupying the windows 2nd and 3rd from the right. My family were oyster dealers/fishermen and had their own boats, so it is quite likely that the boats pictured here by the front garden gates may well have been theirs and they could well be pictured here perhaps. Mr Samuel grew dahlia’s in that front garden. The original plate of this picture was in the printers shop in Preston Hall Museum a few years ago.

  2. John Walker is a relative of mine- he was my grannies great great (possibly great) uncle? I’ll ask her if she has any pictures.

  3. The terraced houses on the right between the Baltic Tavern and the Ship Launch Inn have numbers and addresses on the Quayside. Cleveland Row was behind the photographer on the far side of the Ship Launch Inn. This famous photograph appeared on the old site along with many comments and a different title.
