This is Misses Ward, a baby linen warehouse at 40 Stockton High Street c1899. Misses Ward was only at the premises from 1896 – 1901, she then moved to 75 High Street for three years until she finally relocated to 28 High Street where she stayed until 1918.
This picture is of No 75. I’ve seen exactly the same picture before, on that version you could also see the shop next door, which has a No.74 on it. If this is No.75 then later it would be next door to Doggarts and became Henderson’s Jewellers. The yard to the right is signposted Cowans builders/shopfitters.
1914 Trade directory shows:
Ward, M. E., S. A. & E. (Misses), ladies’ outfitters, 28 High Street.
