The reason for this royal visit to Stockton was the town’s railway centenary celebrations.
In the morning the Duke and Duchess had watched the historic cavalcade of steam, then they came to Stockton Station and were greeted by the Mayor, Mr Ropner. The Duke inspected a guard of honour formed by soldiers from the Durham Light Infantry, which you can just see behind him in the photograph. Then the royal couple were taken to the Town Hall for lunch.
After lunch they were shown the old ticket office in Bridge Road where the Duke unveiled the commemorative plaque in the wall.

Is that the roof and clock at Stockton Station in the background? Presumably the Duke’s party had arrived by rail.
