Demolition of Thorpe Thewles Viaduct – 1979

Photographs of the demolition of the Thorpe Thewles Railway viaduct, 1979. These photographs were taken by my dad who was a serving Police Sargeant at the time, they were taken from one of the farmers fields on the left side of the A177, up from the Horse and Jockey. I was about 11 years old as I watched the viaduct being demolished.

Photographs taken by Ray Newbrook, details courtesy of Heather Pybus.

  1. Dear Heather, Great pics! Please, was the viaduct anywhere near the river? Its just that as a kid on holiday when I was 7/8yrs old I sat and watched a loco pulling empty coal waggons across it. My Dad was born in Thornaby, 1922 all gone just like so many things…

    • Thanks Larry, sadly my dad is no longer with us either. No, sorry this viaduct is not near the River Tees, are you not thinking about the viaduct at Yarm, which is still standing and still used?
