Ahh dessies fish shop, my mouth is watering thinking of his fish and chips, lots of bread and lurpak it was the treat of the week.
Picture shows Dessie Sharp’s new fish shop, presumably after the old one on Thornaby road bank had been pulled down.
We lived, in the late 70’s next door to the Sharps in Queens Avenue – Mrs Sharp occupied the downstairs flat and Dessie the upstairs flat. Mrs Sharp was a lovely woman with a great sense of humour – I remember the day my husband came home from work to find her sitting on the front door step. She had sat down to enjoy the sun and was unable to get up, being quite elderly and possibly arthritic. Fortunately, my husband (a manual worker) was fairly fit in those days but he still remembers how he had to use all his strength to lift the loveable but rather large lady back onto her feet.
