This is a photograph of Class 1 at the end of their final year at Roseworth Juniors with Miss Cook our teacher and Mr Knowles the Headmaster. I can remember the names of most of the pupils if anyone would like to know.
Photograph and details courtesy of Bryan Greenhalgh.

I know I am way too late to the party, but if that is Rowena Horne (and it does look like her) in the third row then this picture was either taken a year later or it wasn’t their final year? There was also a Pamela Walker, Rowena’s best friend? I’m in the other photo – I was in Mr Crabbe’s (spelling?) class in the huts with my cousin Carol Ann Matthews. This I think is correctly dated. I was born April 1951 so we would have sat our 11+ in early 62. Class 1 was for those the school expected to pass their 11+ so they were taught by Miss Cook and Mr Kowles and they stayed in the main school building; the other classes of the same age group who were expected not to do so well, went to the huts. My best friend Mickey Reynolds was in one of the other classes. I failed my 11+, Rowena Horne passed and went to Grangey Grammar, I was heartbroken 🙁
Just thinking; if the photo was taken in the September to Christmas term then it would have still been 1961, but in the 1961/62 school year?
Just thinking – if the photo was taken in the September to Christmas term it would have still be 1961, but I still sure the it was the 1961/62 school year?
Hi Bryan Greenhalgh, I certainly remember your name and the teachers, thanks I had forgotten their names. It was probably my class but not sure, I started at Grangefield in 1962 so this might be the year above me. It could be me on the back row.

I’m trying to trace an old army pal of mine, his name is Jackie Henderson, should be around 77 or 79? We were in the 12th l.a.a regt royal artillery, stationed in celle herford, lipstadt, Germany, 1955 to 1970. Jack lived in Roseworth at the time, so if any one can give me a feedback on him I’ll be so pleased, my contact number and email address is available through Picture Stockton. Ron Armstrong. Thank you …
I attended this school until 1960/1 – does anyone remember me? Valerie Gilsenan (nee Morgan).
Hello Valerie. Yes I remember you quite well, although I couldn’t recall your first name, I just knew you as Miss Morgan, you were a very good teacher! Where are you now?
Best Regards,
David Honeyman
I went to Roseworth Junior and I always remember the thought of going to the Secondary School and the fear of gettin a ducking on your first day. I had a parka with white rabbit fur round the hood. Must have looked a right prat but I thought it was cool I suppose. Unless my mother made me. Always did what your parents told you.
Noggy Knowles was a teacher at Newtown before Roseworth and Miss Cook was at Newham Grange.
Mr Knowles was in the forces during and to the end of the 2nd WW. His first appointment as a teacher after his demob was at the Frederick Nattrass Junior mixed school.
Goodness me, that’s a tester! After 50 odd years I think I can recall all the boys and about half the girls in our class of forty eight pupils, although I’m not sure whether to be pleased -or worried about memory loss. Can you jog my memory with the first five girls from the left on the scond to back row? I think I know the next four girls then sadly can’t recall the last two before David Mannion on the right. Third row from the back, I believe I can recognise seven of the thirteen: (Susan Thomas, Mary Luke, Heather Mallaby, Muriel Foulger, Julie Moss and on the far right, Rowena Horne and Carol Shaw).
Many apologies to those who I can’t quite recall at the moment – I’m sure this will be reciprocated ( I’m on the back row, second pupil from the right).
I think this must have been taken in Summer 1962 just before we all went our different ways to various secondary schools just after the ” Scholarship”- where did you go off to, Bryan, was it Campus?
Forty eight seems awfully large for a class size these days, but from what I recall, it seemed to work OK. My mother has just moved out of our family home on Roseworth recently and I discovered my old school reports when clearing out the house.
I wonder what we all ended up doing with our lives, and how many of us are still living locally?
left of second back row, : susan parnaby, carol mitchell, not sure, irene geldart, carol ballantyne, patricia fenwick
third row from back : thats me in the 7th seat from left (maureen date). jean simms next to julie moss. sure more will come to me.
Gosh what a trial for your memory this is. I have this photo still in with all my old photos, got a few more I think.
Hi Terry this is David Honeyman I’m fifth boy from left on the back row. I recall most of the faces but sadly not the names. I’m not local having left Stockton late teens, lived in a few countries and since 2010 in Newbury, Berkshire. I get to Thornaby occasionally to see my Aunt but she complains about my accent.
