This was a lovely agricultural hamlet in the 30’s 40’s and 50’s and 60’s. I remember it well. Metcalfe’s house is still there it was among the trees to the right. The cottages were quite small and pretty and in the autumn the trees surrounding the hamlet were gorgeous. I won a prize at school when I wrote a composition describing the scene.
Wasn’t the large house in it’s own grounds (just out of shot to the right, in the trees) owned by the Durham family, who were involved in the road-haulage business? Did they sell the rear of their grounds, to the brewery company that built The Mitre public house?
Yes the house was sold in late 1999 when the Sandersons died. The three daughters still own the land at the back of the house which you can see the photo.

To my knowledge, the large house still standing beside The Mitre, was owned by Bobby Durham Snr in 1970.
I’m not 100% sure but I think the family name that occupied the property up to perhaps the 1960’s/1970’s was ‘Sanderson’… I’ll stand corrected.
