Next to McLaughan’s shop was Dargue’s the cobblers. I remember having to take shoes and boots there to be repaired and he gave you a ticket to retrieve them when repaired. He later moved into Leven Road. He lived in either Metcalfe Street or Bolsover Street which were behind what is now the Malleable Club.
In the F T Lordon advert where was Melbourne Terrace, Frank? I seem to remember the name Lordon. I thought it might have been where the Grange vets is now.
Sorry Bob no recollection of Melbourne Terrace or F T Lordon, I knew Melbourne Street in Stockton and knew of of Sowerby McLaughlan’s and Clarke’s.
I could name most people round the Green and one came to mind today, Miss Mabel Lonsdale, first cottage on the left facing the green before turning into Mill Lane, it came about as I tried to remember the young man who lived next door to Miss Page who flew a biplane pre-war and did aerobatics over the green, he would be called up when war began.
Some I worked with in later years, Ken York, both the Hendersons and Jack Kirk. Sheila Kirk was working with my to be wife and several in the estates around the green. I sometime see the Fletchers girl from Beaconsfield Street who went to school with me, she worked in Marks and Spencers for years and must live on Crooksbarn that is where I see her. Still a few of us around Bob.
Any trips down that end of the village would be the Pictures or the Carlton dance hall we were fairly parochial back then.
