Corner of Skinner Street/Dovecot Street, Stockton – 2012

t12781A photograph taken on the corner of Skinner Street and Dovecot Street looking towards Prince Regent Street of the Clarendon Pub (closed) originally Stockton Post Office building and the former Scout Hall? By 1991 it was Martini’s Bar but originally the Friends (Quaker) Meeting House and The Arc. Interesting to note: The bakery shop shown, named ‘Rowntrees’, may have some family connection with the famous York ‘chocolate’ family,(1860’s) the head of which, a Quaker grocer called Joseph Rowntree, had married a woman from the Stockton Quaker Community, in which there was a local family called Rowntree at that time..

  1. The Dovecot street shop named “Rowntrees” in the picture was owned by Micheal Rowntree. I knew Michael (and his younger brother) from my childhood when his family lived next to my grandparents in Studley Road, Newtown. Whether or not they were related to the famous York “chocolate” family of the same name I don’t know!
