  1. An 18th century coaching-inn positioned at the junction of three busy routes at that time. The Billingham Lane (leading north to Sunderland), The High Street (leading north west to Durham) and The Portrack Lane (now South Road – leading to shipping activities on the River Tees) The other major coaching-inn at Norton was the White Swan, which forms part of the terrace in the righthand background.
