After the RAF sold the airfield to Thornaby Council, the standard of 608 Squadron was laid up in York Minster. Having visited the minster I was unable to locate the standard and was told by one of the ushers that he knew nothing of its whereabouts. Can anybody throw any light on the matter?
Yes , the 608 Squadron Standard is laid up near the Astronomical Clock in the north transept . It is or was displayed in a glass case near the crypt stairs ? The clock commemorates the airmen of Britain , the Commonealth and Allied countries who lost their lives while operating from airfields in Durham , Northumberland and Yorkshire . There is also a Roll Of Honour of some 18,000 airmen who failed to return from operations . The 608 Standard is in very good company .
