  1. Sadly, built 20-30 years too late, as were other automated marshalling yards built at around this time in the early 1960s, Tyne Yard Lamesley Tyneside, Tinsley Sheffield, Millerhill Edinburgh, Perth, Kingmoor Carlisle. Healey Mills West Yorkshire. Millions of pounds wasted. By the time they were built freight traffic was bleeding away to road transport. Dr Beeching would probably have cancelled many of these yards, but arrived on B.R. too late to do so as they were already under construction.

  2. We used to go to the loco sheds (the round shed) during our school holidays for train numbers and hoped that we weren’t chased!

  3. Good pictures of the Down Hump Pilot and Up Yard Gordon, its Tees Yard 50 years old this month and like you say Gordon, most if not all of it has gone, I remember working the yards on local turns. The bottom picture show’s the Down Hump Pilot on the engine release line.

    • Bill, I think you will find that that is the Up yard, you can tell because the tower on the left is only two stories high, the down hump has Tes Box in it and is three stories high
