Little Richard injured his ankle and went home before the Kingston show, Gene Vincent replaced him at Kingston and Jimmy Justice replaced him at Stockton and Southend.
I was also at this show and remember Duane Eddy not playing his electric guitar. I seem to remember being told (or I read it in the New Musical Express which I bought every week!) that his backing group, The Rebel Rousers, didn’t have work permits or they hadn’t arrived in time. Duane Eddy did indeed play a few solo numbers on his acoustic guitar in front of the drawn curtains… a bit of a let down! After the show I remember seeing the Shirelles come out of the stage door.
This was the show at The Globe the week before the Beatles made their appearance on the same stage, on the day President Kennedy was assassinated. The promoter of the tour, Don Arden, moved into ‘group’ management the next year. Thereafter being known as ‘Mr Big’ and somewhat notoriously handling the careers of such bands as The Small Faces, Black Sabbath and ELO. His daughter (b.1952) became better known to us, years later as Sharon Osbourne.
I can’t remember who replaced Little Richard. Think he had broken his foot. Think it was also that night that all Duane Eddy did was walk onto stage but didn’t play anything because there was a musician’s union strike.
Jimmy Justice replaced Richard. Me and my mate Nipper Weatherall got our
money back. Apparently Duane played solo accousic guitar, true or not, I don’t know !
You could be right about Duane Eddy. All I can remember is my friends and I were we’ll cheesed off. Didn’t get our money back either!!!
