Dovecot Street and Buchanan Street, Stockton

I drove down to the top or bottom end of Dovecot Street by mistake earlier last month (2013) and was quite taken by the exposed gable ends and their old paint and wallpaper so I went back and took a few photos. The short row of partially demolished houses are on Buchanan Street. Most of this area has now been cleared and interestingly a recent edition of the Gazette had an SBC notice for planning permission for new houses in both Buchanan Street and St Bernard Road .

  1. My parents owned the shop in Tarring Street. I lived there, from 1962 until 1968. Before that I lived in 77 Tarring Street which was across the road from the shop, from 1940 until 1962.

  2. So sad…whose hair-brained idea was it to knock the houses down and rebuild? Okay they didn’t look pretty but they were solid, more solid than anything that will replace them. There isn’t the money in the North East for buying properties; and if they are being built to rent then why the extra cost of demolishing and rebuilding? Why not just rent out the existing properties?
Sorry my nan’s old house (the old wool shop on the corner of Dovecot and Buchanan) has been demolished. Revamping Stockton has not improved the drug situation, the depression in the area or unemployment figures significantly so I have to ask why? Rather than painting the town and changing the look, whoseever the money is it would have been better spent on cleaning Stockton’s problems (ie drugs, gangs and council estate communities).

  3. Allegedly they’re refraining from knocking the rest of it down as one person refuses to move. Interesting that the wallpaper is visible for a demolished house (as verified by my own eyes)! Would be a pity these places couldn’t be refurbished but the low prices for houses for sale in the area (lowest in town I gather) probably reflected the fact that no-one wanted them so…

    • I lived in Buchannan Street from 1956 until 1980 and the only corner shops I remember were Stobbarts wool Shop, Mc Gregors grocery and Jessie Clarkes dress shop ,oh and Mr Beans the cobblers.

      • There was shop at the Yarm Lane end of Buchanan Street, next to the Toc H wooden building. I was brought up in Tarring Street, and passed it every day on my way to Ashmores, but I can’t remember who owned that corner shop.
