Castle Theatre Foundation Stone c1907

t4539A photograph presumably of the Mayor of Stockton; Alderman John Harrison Esq. as he stands behind the foundation stone as the construction of the Castle Theatre gets underway c1907. The theatre was completed in 1908 and once occupied the area where the former Swallow Hotel now stands.

  1. The man behind the foundation stone is indeed John Harrison (later Sir John). He was a printer and an owner of numerous ordinary houses in central Stockton, so presumably a landlord. He was Mayor again in June 1917 and thus welcomed King George V and Queen Mary to Stockton during their visit to the North East.
