My first job after leaving school in 1971 was For E Clayton whose premises were to the rear of the pub. It involved helping, as much as a 16 year old can, in the laying of large cables on a site which I believe was to become Washington. Tyne and Wear, not DC.
Interesting to compare it with a photo taken some five years later also by Bill Purchase and also taken from a Canberra aircraft ! http://picturestocktonarchive.wordpress.com/2013/03/21/aerial-view-of-carlton-village-1968/
Note the new(ish) extensive car park behind the pub in the later photograph , perhaps heralding greater use of motor cars , dining out and the advent of ‘chicken in a basket’ !
