Dr George Cuthbert Mura M’Gonigle’s gravestone has been re-erected thanks to the intervention of Ian Stage of St. Mary’s Church, Norton and Councillor Bob Cook of Stockton Borough Council. Dr M’Gonigle was medical officer of health for Stockton-on-Tees from 1924 up until his death in 1939.

Last year I had the deeds of my parents’ burial plot transferred to me at a cost of £66 This is necessary if the plot is to be further used or work carried out on gravestone. Stockton register office deal with all such requests.
There is an interesting film available to watch on YouTube about Dr Mcgonigle called “One mans story”
The film is still available on the BFI site

It is very interesting and there are a number of scenes shot in the High Street where local residents appear.
The BFI is a national archive of film, it has many films of life in Britain over the last hundred or more years, the films in this section are free to watch.
Hi Bruce, thought you might like to know that we are trialling the BFI Replay in the library in December. This is a free streaming service for use in UK public lending libraries. You are welcome to join us if you would like to? Best wishes Donna (Ref)
Hello Donna,
Many thanks for the information, I will pop into the Library during the trialling of the BFI viewer.
I am interested in local history, social, industrial, architectural and commercial and have viewed all of the BFI offerings of local interest.
You may be able to answer a query for me, I know the Library has access to the Middlesbrough Evening Gazette archives on Micro-Fische and I was wondering if there is any sort of index, I am looking for a motoring mishap in Middlesbrough Newport Road in the early 1960s, I know all about the incident but can only get an approximate date, it would be impossible to wade through two years of archives but a pointer to either motoring incidents or specific location would be a great help.
The Gazette article included a photograph of the incident.
Best Wishes
Bruce
Hello Bruce,
Unfortunately there isn’t an index for the Middlesbrough Evening Gazette that we know of. Hopefully the newspaper will eventually be digitised for that decade making it easier to search.
Best wishes,
Hannah

Whilst I am very pleased to see this headstone being re-erected in memory of Dr M’Gonigle, I would be very grateful if someone (Mr Stage or Mr Cook) could point me in the right direction of who to approach to try and have a headstone re-erected, or at least, turned over, which is the final resting place of one of my great grandparents in this Churchyard. I can appreaciate that it may have been laid flat for safety reasons, but to be laid flat, face down, is very upsetting to me.
Suggest you go on line to Stockton BC and ask who looks after that cemetery. If you are related, you own it as far as I understand and so you will probably have to pay for any required work. Apologies for the very belated comment on this recovered item but I have just seen it.
