I remember the fair being in “the woods” – that’s if you’re talking about the woods that rounded round Marsh House Avenue, Revaulx Avenue and Melrose Avenue – used to love going there, we had dens all round the place but last time my sister and I were back there (we live in Guernsey) there were hardly any trees left.

Well now in reply to your question about the woods that rounded Marsh House Avenue, Rievaulx Avenue, and Melrose Avenue, well they simply thinned the woods out quite a long time ago and decided to build some O.A.P. bungalows on Marsh House Avenue, and Melrose Avenue, i can remember them doing it, as I live in Rievaulx Avenue opposite the field, we had the bus stop at the top of our garden, We also once a year had a fair on the field for a week each year, hope this helps you Maureen.
I remember when I was a toddler getting the bus outside of Broughs now (Boots chemist) to go to Stockton. The town center looked better then than it does today (at least then we had shops that were open). I also remember playing in the tunnels where Boyes is now, when Dereck Crouch Built the town centre. This photograph must date to around 1956-57 and is looking up Queensway towards the roundabout and Roseberry road in the distance. The shop on the corner nearest the camera was at that time Brown Brothers and Taylors. I remember watching from my bedroom window this road being first cut and laid across the green field site along with the Causeway in 1952-53. The number of parked cars is quite surprising must have been a Saturday. On the left of the picture is an open field which we used to cross to the shops from the back of our house in Malvern road. Yes the fair was where the police station is now, each year until the police station was built. It was then moved to where the forum now is, then later to what was called ‘the woods’.
IAN, I CAN’T REMEMBER A FAIR THERE DO REMEMBER A FAIR IN THE VILLAGE OVER FROM THE POLICE STATION I THINK IT CAME EVERY YEAR DO YOU? GOODNESS, I REMEMBER NOW, IT WAS THERE. THE TIME I REMEMBER IS ABOUT 1956 I HAD A NEW SKIRT ON AND I RIPPED IT GETTING ON THE ROUND ABOUT, I DIDN’T DARE GO HOME.
Has anyone got a photo of the old police station house on Melrose Avenue? I now own that house and would love to see it!

Isn’t the field to the left where the Fair used to set up for a week, back in the 50s?

The Fair used to stretch from opposite Woolworths, up to where the Kennedy Flats are. ( If they are still there )
