As a lad, together with several pals we used to pass the dairy on our way to see the wonders of the cattle market, usually as the milk floats were returning from their rounds, young women controlling a spirited horse and it’s cart, knowing it would soon be fed and stabled was a wonderful sight, as time passed the girls had electric floats controlled by a single handlebar as they walked in front, no ride in comfort for them in those days more of Stockton’s character faded into Oblivion.
I worked there as a milkman for 2 years in 1976/77 until I had an accident on the way in one morning (my car was hit by a double decker bus) which put me in North Tees in traction for 3 months oh yeah and wrote my MG off, sort of sad to see it gone.
I use to live in Bay Street [behind Church Road] and I always use to walk on the dairy wall… happy days. It didn’t take much to make us happy! Has anyone got pics of Bay Street, or surrounding streets?
Prior to this building being erected, along with the adjacent former motor showroom/garage which still exists, there was a terrace of large, elegant, early 19thC. private residences known as ‘Paradise Place’ standing on this site. The extended section of Church Row then being known as Paradise Row, of which several houses still survive on the opposite side.
I used to work there as the milk pasteuriser in the late 60’s! I lost gallons through not checking the tanks as they were filling up from the deliveries, Mr. McArdle the manager used to pull his hair out when the courtyard was ankle deep in milk 😎
