The woman is definitely Maureen Taylor, how ironic she is walking under a shop with Taylor on it!!
She was my Godmother. R.I.P. Steve Haynes (now residing in Perth WA)
Hi, message for Jim Muir, it’s Linda Parmella and I’ve lost your email address, doh – but I think you’ve still got mine, looking forward to seeing you in November x
Jim Muir is right on the mark. Before the reorganization Billingham was well kept and prospered under the ICI tax system. I recall streets getting repaved very 5 – 10 years (Bedford Crescent where my Nana & granddad lived) and great public facilities – Forum, Billingham Campus, etc. Then came the reorganization and the decline started. Sad.
They may look old fashioned now, but they built a great town. Notwithstanding changes in industrial structures and central government funding, I can’t help but think that they were let down by those who followed.
The last time I was in Billingham Town Centre a year ago I was surprised to see how rundown it was, with a lot of the shops boarded up & everywhere looking extremely neglected.
Hi Jim, this Derek Appleton – Decca to you. We had lots of great times in the town centre Jim, especially at the ARMS, remember. Met my old school pals at the Half Moon at Christmas and then again in July. Nice Pub but, nothing could touch the Billingham Arms. E-Mail me Jim, you said you would after you got your PC sorted out.

I remember when Billingham Town Centre was surrounded by just a few shops and grass.

The chap in the black over-coat could be Keith Joseph a Tory minister.
