  1. Hi there, I am related to Dorothy & Evelyn Elcoate, Norton – do you know if the Yarm Elcoates are the same family?

  2. My father was Brian Elcoate. My mum left him when I was 4. I have no memory if him and no photo. I would love to know more about him. I believe he left Yarm. He settled in Nottingham.

  3. John (Jack) and his wife Evelyn (Eva) were my grandparents. I spent a lot of time in the house behind that shop in the 60s and 70s. Other than my Father all their children stayed in and around Yarm. I’ve tried to visit the town twice in the last couple of – couldn’t get parked!

  4. Decided to do some research about the Elcoates for personal reasons, my mother was married to one so I guess you can figure that one out.. I have heard stories over the years now I’m in my 50’s perhaps its time to lay this ghost to rest. Any info would be appreciated.

    • Who was your Mother and who in the Elcoate clan was she married to? I’m David. The house and shop in the photo belonged to my Grandparents and I spent a lot of time there in the 60s and 70s.

      • Hi
sorry its taken awhile. My mother (Jean McGarrity) married Brian Elcoat (I think). She had two children myself and elder sister. They divorced soon after I was born and we were adopted by her husband. I remember little about this side of our family, apart from some brief encounters.

        • Never heard of a Brian. I do know there are other distant relatives around that area with the ‘e’ dropped off the surname. One of them managed Arsenal!! My lot were (generally) Johns Richards and Williams.

          • Thanks for getting back, I could be wrong about his first name, will ask my sister although I understand he recently died so I guess its a mute point.

            • Hi, Just obtained a copy of marriage certificate. It was John B Elcoate they married in 1956.

              • Not my line I’m afraid – My grandfather John married 1908, his son John in the 1930s and the only other John is my brother b1962.

        • Hi, I have just found this thread, better late than never…Im your half cousin I think! Brian Elcoate was my uncle Jack’s son. Jack was I think the eldest of my grandad John Elcoates children. He had a son and a daughter Margaret who would be your auntie. My sister Maureen remembers your mum when she lived in Yarm and saw her with a baby ? Elizabeth..she used to do her hair cos she was a hairdresser.
My mum , Mary would have been your cousin, I think. we never knew what happened to Brian, he seemed to disappear and no one knew what happened to him I think…I think it was something to do with alcohol problems…but arent sure..my sister knows most folk
          hope this helps
          Mary xx

          • Brian died in 1995/6 down Lincoln way. Never knew him. My mum did not get on with his mother apparently and we had little contact with the family growing up. The baby would probably have been my sister. Remember she kept in contact with his grandparents who we used to visit as well as a cousin who was into rallying. Once mum remarried contact kind of drifted off.

All kind of sad now I suppose on reflection. My sister and I have a whole family we never knew.

            • Hi, my Mum is the daughter of John ‘Brian’ Elcoate who died c1995/96 due to alcohol problems and all of the above sounds like him. She only knew him until the age of around 5 and didn’t hear from him again (which would have been around 1970). She would love to get in touch with you and see if there’s any family history there. Please let me know and we can get in contact!

    • Hi. I am doing the same. My father was John BRIAN Elcoate. My mum left him when I was about 4. I have no memory of him, but would like to find out more. I am now 58. He lived in Nottingham the rest of his life. If you’d like to get in touch, please do so – just email Picture Stockton at pictures@stockton.gov.uk.

  5. When I joined F Hiills in 1973 Elcoates did contract painting there. They primed door frames and components. There were 2 painters one being Tony Morgan the I just forget his name at the moment. When Elcoates finished trading these 2 painters were taken on by Hills
